In January-July 2020, 60 (compared to 61 in the same period last year) road traffic accidents involving pedestrians were registered in the Vitebsk region, resulting in 12 (compared to 11 in the same period last year) fatalities and 49 (compared to 52 in the same period last year) injuries of varying severity.
In January-July 2020, 60 (compared to 61 in the same period last year) road traffic accidents involving pedestrians were registered in the Vitebsk region, resulting in 12 (compared to 11 in the same period last year) fatalities and 49 (compared to 52 in the same period last year) injuries of varying severity. Of these, 24 accidents were caused by pedestrians, resulting in 9 fatalities and 16 injuries. Furthermore, there has been a significant increase in the growth rate of accidents caused by pedestrians under the influence of alcohol (from 7 to 14 individuals).
At the same time, despite the ongoing efforts to prevent accidents involving cyclists, an increase in incidents involving this category of road users has been recorded, from 14 to 18, as well as an increase in the number of injured individuals (from 12 to 16). In turn, 9 accidents were caused by cyclists, resulting in 2 fatalities and 7 injuries. 4 incidents involved cyclists who were under the influence of alcohol.
The problem of insufficient discipline among motorcyclists remains relevant, as evidenced by the incidents registered this year.
Specifically, 8 accidents caused by drivers of two-wheeled motor vehicles have been registered, resulting in 1 fatality and 7 injuries, 5 of which were caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol.
To enhance the effectiveness of accident prevention measures involving motorcycles, promote road safety in the operation of motor vehicles, prevent incidents involving and caused by pedestrians and cyclists, and foster mutual respect among road users, the State Automobile Inspectorate of the Vitebsk region will be conducting a series of preventive measures from August 20 to 24, 2020.

To ensure road safety and prevent fatalities and injuries, please report any vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists,of horse-drawn transport drivers) who are in a state of alcoholic intoxication, or whose behaviour creates prerequisites for committing road traffic accidents, with the aim of their timely removal from the roadway, as well as to provide to the State Automobile Inspectorate video files from video recorders that have recorded the fact of failure to yield to pedestrians at unregulated pedestrian crossings.
