The creation of the press is one of the stages of the art project "Polotsk Typography," which has been implemented by the staff of the Polotsk Children's Art School specifically for the 500th anniversary of Belarusian book printing. The institution decided that Skaryna's descendants should know how the first printed books of Belarus were created.
In order to master the art of book printing, children studied various graphic techniques and created creative compositions of print graphics, and the school's teacher, Dmitry Svyatsky, made a real press for printing engravings. "The uniqueness of the press lies in the fact that it is created as a stylized model of a printing press from the times of Francysk Skaryna and Johannes Gutenberg," the press service emphasized. "Project participants mastered graphic techniques such as linocut, engraving on plaster and cardboard, printing using templates, stencils, and carbon paper. In total, students and teachers printed several hundred works."
The culmination of the art project "Polotsk Typography" will be a thematic art space during the Day of Belarusian Written Language in Polotsk. An exhibition of print graphics will be presented here, and master classes on printing engravings will be held. Polotsk assures that all participants and guests of the festival will have the opportunity to print a small composition themselves on the model of the printing press from Skaryna's time.
