8 May, Vitebsk /Diana Kurilo - BELTA/. The judicial system of Belarus is ready to work with the institution of jurors. This opinion was expressed in a conversation with a BELTA correspondent by the Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Court, Nikolai Khamichenok, while discussing the Address of the President of Belarus to the Belarusian people and the National Assembly. Courts, as one of the branches of power, do not remain aloof from the processes taking place in society. The President's Address on the prospects for the development of the general court system of Belarus mentioned the need to consider the possibility of establishing the institution of jurors in Belarus, the interviewee recalled. In his opinion, the judicial system of Belarus is on the verge of establishing a jury trial. At the same time, for the new institution to function, an increase in the legal awareness and legal literacy of society is necessary, the chairman of the court believes. One should not forget that a jury trial is expensive justice, as jurors' work is compensated. A legislative framework for jury trials is needed. World practice has shown that this system has both positive and negative aspects. For example, in the Russian Federation, it is not uncommon for jury verdicts to be overturned, so one should not engage in blind copying, Nikolai Khamichenok believes. However, despite all the difficulties associated with the establishment of the institution of jurors, it is necessary, the interviewee believes. "Thus, the court truly becomes a people's court," he said.-0-
