3 October, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA/. Three "Sobriety Route" buses have started operating in Novopolotsk during peak hours, reported Yekaterina Popok, Head of the Ideological Work Department of the Novopolotsk City Executive Committee, to a BELTA correspondent.
Information about the harmful effects of alcohol is broadcast on the transport operating on the "Sobriety Route". However, this is not the only step the city has taken to implement its plan to combat drunkenness, emphasized Yekaterina Popok. This plan was developed to implement the resolution of the first city people's assembly "Indifference is the path to a reliable society". In accordance with it, information leaflets about the risk of fatal alcohol poisoning from excessive consumption have been posted in all retail outlets selling spirits and beer, and anti-alcohol advertising is broadcast on an LED screen. Local authorities, together with law enforcement agencies, regularly conduct raids to identify individuals who abuse alcohol and to prevent domestic alcoholism.
Since September, Novopolotsk has been holding monthly "Sobriety Days", as well as the "Sobriety Morning" campaign, which restricts the availability of alcoholic, low-alcohol beverages, and beer from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
The initiatives were initiated by the residents of Novopolotsk themselves during the first people's assembly. At that time, representatives of work collectives of enterprises, institutions, organizations, and public associations, after discussing the problem, adopted a resolution which became an action plan for the prevention of drunkenness and alcoholism for 2011-2015. -0-
