Thirty-degree frosts are expected this week in Vitebsk, Lyudmila Borodenok, a leading engineer-forecaster at the Vitebsk Regional Centre for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, told a BELTA correspondent. The frost that set in the region last week will continue to intensify in the coming days. Daytime air temperature in the region is expected to be around 17-22 degrees Celsius, while at night the thermometer will drop to minus 28 degrees, and to minus 30 degrees in clear spells. The first month of the year did not bring any temperature records to the Vitebsk region, but it was marked by two opposite natural anomalies. Thus, the beginning of January will be remembered by forecasters for air temperatures 7-10 degrees below the climatic norm, and the end of January for temperatures 7-10 degrees above it. Alongside this, atmospheric pressure, which is 771 mm, has come close to the 1929 record of 773 mm. The severe cold snap did not lead to mass cold-related injuries. Thus, over the past week, only four people sought medical attention at the trauma centre of the Vitebsk City Emergency Hospital due to such injuries. Three residents of the region were hospitalised at the Regional Clinical Hospital over the past weekend, according to these medical institutions. The main cause of cold-related injuries, according to medics, was carelessness in clothing and inattention to one's health: some suffered while fishing due to clothing errors, others did not take care of their freezing hands and feet in time. Elderly people who exceeded the duration of winter walks were also among the vulnerable. "During severe frosts, it is necessary to be especially attentive to your health," the medics added. -0-
