On September 5, Minsk /BelTA correspondent/. The Central Commission of Belarus for Elections and Republican Referendums completed the registration of candidates for the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus of the fifth convocation today, recognizing the legitimacy of their nomination in all regions and in Minsk, BelTA reports.
Characterizing the composition of the registered candidates for the Council of the Republic as a whole, the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission, Lidia Yermoshina, noted today in a conversation with journalists that there are many well-known personalities among them.
Thus, the current Chairman of the Council of the Republic, Anatoly Rubinov, the Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences, Anatoly Rusetsky, the Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee, Nikolai Ladutko, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Amkodor holding, Alexander Shakutin, are vying to represent the interests of the capital in the upper house of parliament.
The chairmen of the regional executive committees are registered as candidates for the Council of the Republic: Brest region - Konstantin Sumar, Vitebsk region - Alexander Kosinets, Gomel region - Vladimir Dvornik, Minsk region - Boris Batura, Mogilev region - Petr Rudnik.
For the first time, the first secretary of the Central Committee of the public association "Belarusian Republican Youth Union", Igor Buzovsky, and the first secretary of the Grodno Regional Committee of the public association "BRSM", Yuri Aleksey, have been nominated for the post of senator.
A total of 56 people are vying for a seat in the Senate. Among them are representatives of various other fields of activity: civil servants, industrialists, doctors, journalists, businessmen.
The procedure for forming the upper house of the Belarusian parliament combines elements of election and appointment. Eight members each are elected from each region and Minsk at meetings of deputies of the basic level Councils of Deputies and at a meeting of the Minsk City Council of Deputies. Another eight members of the Council of the Republic are appointed by the President's decree.
Elections to the Council of the Republic are scheduled to take place from September 6 to September 25 inclusive. The results will be summarized no later than October 5 inclusive.
