Lepel region is a remarkable land of Belarus, located in the south of the Vitebsk region. Here, the historical destinies, cultures, and traditions of various nationalities – Belarusians, Russians, Poles, Jews – are wonderfully intertwined.
Lepel region is famous for its lakes, rivers, marshes, and forests. The local landscapes are exceptionally beautiful at any time of the year. The pristine aura of these places attracts masters of the brush and photography enthusiasts like a magnet.
The wealth of the region is its forests. The area of the green necklace is 96 thousand hectares, or 53% of the district's territory.
The expanses of the Lepel land are organically permeated by blue arteries. Over 80 rivers and streams, like a network of small veins, pulsate under the canopy of coastal willow and bird cherry thickets. Nature, having generously scattered more than 130 turquoise crystal lakes across the green carpet, thus completed the adornment of Lepel region. The largest lakes are Lake Lepel (area 10.18 sq. km.), Okono, Bereshcha, Voron', Bobritsa, Teklits, Kakisino.
Undoubtedly, the main adornment of the natural treasury is the State Nature Protection Institution "Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve" with its centre in the village of Domzheritsy – the largest scientific and educational institution of global significance. The ecosystems of marshes and black alder forests have no analogues not only in Belarus but also on the entire European continent. Eloquent recognition of the uniqueness of the Berezinsky Reserve's landscapes is evidenced by the fact that, among the first reserves of the former USSR, it was granted biosphere status in 1979. The reserve's merits in preserving global landscape and biological diversity were recognised by the Council of Europe in 1995.
In addition, there are 4 more Specially Protected Natural Areas (SPNA) in the district:
- The republican significance nature monument Tsar-Dub "Tadulinsky",
- Pyshnyagory Landscape Reserve of local significance,
- Kletishche Landscape Reserve of local significance,
- Lake Kakisino Landscape Reserve of local significance.
The district boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage, creating favourable conditions for tourism development. Lepel District is home to 57 historical and cultural sites of regional significance, 8 of which are intangible. This list is quite extensive, but first and foremost, we would like to highlight the castle complex (14th–16th centuries) located on an island opposite the village of Stary Lepel, and the ruins of defensive ramparts of the fortress (16th century) in the village of Susha. Of particular architectural value are such monuments of architecture as the Church of St. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa (1868) and the Church of St. Casimir (1876) in Lepel, as well as the post office building (1902) and the former wine purification warehouse building (1897) in the city centre, which houses the Lepel District Museum of Local Lore. Some intangible cultural heritage sites can be explored at the Lepel Centre of Crafts.
Lepel District offers ample opportunities for tourist accommodation and catering, including a large number of agro-ecotourism estates, hotels, and other accommodation facilities. The ETK "Nivki" territory features a campsite and an electric charging station. Roadside services are well-developed. The most well-known and popular establishments include the "555" mini-cafe and the "Gostevoy Dvor" complex, whose hotel has been certified since 2025. There is a wide range of dining facilities.
Additionally, the district hosts several health resort organisations: KUP DROTS "Zhemchuzhina", GU "Lepel Military Sanatorium of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus", and OOO "Pensionat LODЭ".
