On January 5, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. Euphrosyne of Polotsk Street may appear in Vitebsk in the near future, Vitaly Dubik, Head of the Architecture and Urban Planning Department of the Vitebsk City Executive Committee, Chief Architect, and Chairman of the City Toponymic Commission, told a BELTA correspondent. In the year of the 1150th anniversary of Polotsk, the issue of renaming one of the streets in the Zheleznodorozhny district in honor of Saint Euphrosyne, an enlightener, one of the greatest women of medieval Europe, who founded a women's monastery in her native town – the Holy Euphrosyne Monastery, which exists to this day, is being decided in the regional center. According to Vitaly Dubik, proposals are being prepared, which will then be submitted for public discussion. "The issue of renaming one of the streets in the northwestern part of the city, leading to the Polotsk direction, is relevant and will be resolved in the near future," he added. Vitebsk has over 500 streets, lanes, avenues, and squares. Some are named after heroes of the Great Patriotic War: Gastello, Zaslonov, Chernyakhovsky, others - figures of the revolution: Volodarsky, Kalinin, famous historical figures: Razin, Pugachev. Many streets are named in honor of writers and poets: Pushkin, Gogol, Korotkevich, Petrus Brovka. Some streets have romantic names like Maple, Flower, or Fruit, there are streets with a geological connotation: Limestone, Sandy, Peat, and even Diamond. However, with all the toponymic diversity, the regional center can hardly find a few dozen streets named after famous countrymen: there is a street named after Francysk Skaryna, and recently a street named after Chagall appeared. -0-
