A unique technology to save the lives of newborns and mothers, who develop a rare condition during pregnancy – placenta accreta – has been implemented in Belarus. Details of the method were shared on the "Our News" program on ONT channel, as reported by BELTA.
The technology has been implemented by two leading institutions in the country – the Republican Scientific and Practical Centre "Mother and Child" and the Republican Scientific and Practical Centre for Organ and Tissue Transplantation.
Women who have previously had a Cesarean section are at risk. The placenta, through which the baby breathes and receives nourishment, attaches to other organs, putting the lives of both the child and the mother at great risk during childbirth. In case of rupture and heavy bleeding, both can die. Therefore, by the time of delivery, medical staff at the "Mother and Child" clinic, along with the pregnant woman, are transferred to the organ and tissue transplantation centre, where endovascular surgeons join the process. They temporarily block the blood vessels, allowing for a virtually bloodless Cesarean section. For the operation to be successful, 15 specialists from the two largest medical centres in the country monitor its progress simultaneously.
To date, over 30 such operations have been performed in Belarus. Even for Europe, such a combination of technologies is often impossible, according to Belarusian specialists. Therefore, foreign colleagues have already expressed interest in the experience of domestic medical professionals.
