President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed the decree "On Declaring 2017 the Year of Science", BELTA was informed by the press service of the Belarusian leader.

The main goal of this decision is to enhance the role of science in addressing the socio-economic development challenges of the country, create favourable conditions for the preservation and development of scientific potential, and shape the international image of Belarus as a country with a high level of intellectual and human capital.

The Government, with the participation of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, regional executive committees, and the Minsk City Executive Committee, has been instructed to develop and approve a national plan of measures for holding the Year of Science in 2017, reflecting the interaction of science with the social sphere, economic sectors, innovative activities, and international scientific and technical cooperation.

The implementation of the plan of measures will contribute to the development of domestic scientific schools, university and sectoral science to ensure sustainable economic growth of the country, enhance the scientific potential of Belarus, support creatively thinking young scientists and specialists, and their patriotic education.
