Belarus holds leading positions among the countries of Europe and Central Asia, and among middle-income countries as a whole, in terms of the share of the middle class in the total population. This data is contained in the "Report on the Russian Economy" posted on the World Bank website, BELTA reports.
According to calculations by World Bank staff, 80% of the population in Belarus can be classified as middle class, approximately 18% of citizens belong to the socially vulnerable category, and about 2% are poor.
There are no extremely poor people in the country at all. For comparison: in Tajikistan and Armenia, the middle class accounts for 2-3% of the total population. In this indicator, Belarus surpasses Poland (about 50%), Russia, Latvia, and Hungary, where the middle class is slightly over 50%, and Lithuania (about 60%).
According to the World Bank's definition, the middle class includes the population with a per capita consumption level of at least $10 per day.-0-
