Scientists are discussing the idea of creating a reference and information portal for the Belarusian language, similar to the well-known Russian resource "Gramota.ru". This was reported to a BELTA correspondent by Igor Kopylov, Director of the Yanka Kupala Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
Such a service, tentatively named "Pravapis.by", would contain a variety of informational and reference materials and provide online consultations. The idea arose from the current situation: the institute receives many requests from both individuals and legal entities regarding the application of lexical, orthographic, and grammatical norms. Officially, the institute issues over 1,500 conclusions and certificates annually, not including telephone consultations.
According to Igor Kopylov, the existence of such a resource would contribute to the popularisation of the language and the improvement of citizens' literacy. The scientists plan to discuss the proposal with the Ministry of Information of Belarus.
In addition, the Institute of Linguistics is developing a new explanatory dictionary in 15 volumes, which will contain 244,000 words. The five-volume dictionary currently in use includes 97,000 words.
