Belarus has revisited the issue of establishing a Ministry of Digital Development and Communications at the Presidential level, according to BELTA. 

As reported by the Telegram channel "Pool of the First," President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko will hold the first meeting of the new year with the leadership of the Council of Ministers today. "The agenda includes the creation of a new ministry – for digital development and communications," the resource writes. 

As BELTA reported, the issue of empowering the Ministry of Communications and Informatization with powers for state regulation of the digitalization sphere was discussed with the head of state back in October 2019. At that time, the participants of the discussion on this and other issues of digital sphere development included heads of government, the Presidential Administration, representatives of state bodies, leading educational institutions, the IT sector, and the High-Tech Park. 

At the same time, the issue of the need to create a state regulator in the sphere of the country's digital development at the level of the head of state was discussed earlier. In particular, during the President's visit to the High-Tech Park in April 2019, representatives of the IT sector initiated the creation of a Ministry of Digital Economy in Belarus. This idea, by order of Alexander Lukashenko, was thoroughly analysed. 
  

At that time, First Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Turchin told reporters about the decision to create a state regulator based on the Ministry of Communications and Informatization, by revising certain functions and changing the ministry's name. The government was to submit draft relevant decisions to the head of state for consideration. In addition, the task was set to bring the work of the Ministry of Communications and Informatization to a qualitatively higher level so that it would work in close cooperation with representatives of the IT sector and be involved in the development of digitalization.
