Belarus is discussing the establishment of a fish nursery for raising salmon fry. This was announced to journalists by the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of Belarus, Igor Kachanovsky, before the presentation of the updated Strategy for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity and the website on the mediation mechanism, as reported by a BELTA correspondent.
Belarus is discussing the establishment of a fish nursery for raising salmon fry. This was announced to journalists by the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of Belarus, Igor Kachanovsky, before the presentation of the updated Strategy for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity and the website on the mediation mechanism, as reported by a BELTA correspondent.
"We want to restore endangered species, for example, salmon. This species is found only in the Viliya River in the Ostrovets district. There is an idea to create a fish nursery, as the Lithuanians did, for raising fry and stocking fishing grounds with them," noted Igor Kachanovsky.
He also explained that this issue is being worked on with the Belarusian Society of Hunters and Fishermen (BOOR). "We are talking about introducing valuable fish species into fishing grounds. There are many such species that we are currently losing in terms of both numbers and species composition," stated the Deputy Minister.
In addition, Belarus plans to build a center for breeding birds of the grouse family. "Here we intend to attract both budget funds and funds from international technical assistance," reported Igor Kachanovsky.
The presentation of the updated Strategy for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity and the website on the mediation mechanism took place today in Minsk. More than 50 representatives of public organizations, ministries and departments, and the media took part in it. "Today we want to present again the updated Strategy for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity. A very specific action plan has been developed for this strategy for the period from 2016 to 2020, and the executors of each action have been identified. There are seventy such actions in total. We have tried to make this plan such that it is not just a discussion about how we love nature and care about it," summarized Igor Kachanovsky. He emphasized that the Strategy has been brought into compliance with international norms.
