Currently, two Heroes of the Soviet Union, who received this high title during the Great Patriotic War, reside in Minsk: Vasily Sergeevich Michurin and Ivan Ilyich Kustov.
As of April 1st of this year, the republic counted 3.1 thousand individuals awarded USSR orders or medals for selfless labour and impeccable military service in the rear during the war years, as well as fewer than 200 individuals who worked at air defence facilities, construction of defensive structures, front-line sections of railways and roads, and crew members of vessels interned in the early stages of the Great Patriotic War in ports of other states.
Belarus is home to 44 individuals who participated in special formations in demining territories and facilities after liberation from German occupation in 1943-1945. The country is home to almost 500 individuals who worked at enterprises, institutions, and organisations in Leningrad during the blockade period and were awarded the medal "For the Defence of Leningrad" and the badge "Resident of Blockaded Leningrad".
The republic has over 700 disabled persons from childhood due to injuries, concussions, or mutilations related to combat operations during the Great Patriotic War or its consequences. There are 732 family members of fallen soldiers and partisans.
17.7 thousand residents of the republic have been recognised as former inmates of Nazi concentration camps, prisons, ghettos, and other places of forced detention.
In all settlements of the republic, regular assessments of the living conditions of Great Patriotic War veterans, family members of those who died during the war, and lonely elderly people are conducted to identify their needs for various types of assistance and provide necessary support. Local executive and administrative bodies support the activities of veterans' public associations and provide assistance to veteran organisations.
