The Minister met with the academic community of Yanka Kupala Grodno State University. The meeting was dedicated to the national education system, current issues, and ways to resolve them.
"The main factor that should influence the improvement of the quality and competitiveness of higher education is the transition to a new system of forecasting, both long-term and short-term, of personnel needs for the economy. It is very important here that secondary vocational and higher education specialities do not duplicate each other," emphasized Igor Karpenko. In his opinion, it is necessary to revise the duration of study as well. There is not always a rational approach in this direction. More attention is planned to be paid to the alignment of curricula and programmes.
The so-called non-core training in universities will also be revised. This primarily concerns the training of economists and lawyers. "The concept for the development of legal education is nearing completion. Information is being summarised, and proposals are being collected from structures interested in training legal personnel. And today, there are initial responses that support us in these initiatives. They concern both the reduction of part-time study in these specialities and the adjustment of curricula and programmes towards practical orientation in those structures where future lawyers or economists are in demand," the Minister said.
According to him, the changes will also affect the admission rules. One of the expected innovations is the expansion of the list of specialities for which an internal examination will be required in addition to centralised testing. "It is also possible to introduce a professional and psychological interview for admission to a number of specialities. It will precede the submission of documents by applicants," noted the head of the department. Adjustments to the admission figures for part-time study are also planned.
Igor Karpenko pointed out that these innovations should not come as a surprise. The process will be step-by-step, and changes will be announced in advance.
