A Centre for Nuclear and Radiation Safety is being established in Belarus. As reported to BELTA by the press service of the Belarusian leader, this is stipulated by Decree No. 361 "On the Establishment of an Institution", which was signed by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on October 5.

In accordance with the document, the state scientific and technical institution "Centre for Nuclear and Radiation Safety" has been established within the structure of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, which will provide continuous independent scientific and technical support to the supervisory authority. The existence of such an institution is an integral and mandatory part of the regulatory infrastructure of a country developing nuclear energy and complies with the recommendations of the IAEA.
The Centre will coordinate the activities of scientific and technical experts in conducting safety assessments of nuclear energy facilities and sources of ionizing radiation, as well as participate in conducting safety expertise of nuclear facilities.
The main areas of the institution's work include: conducting scientifically based analysis of nuclear and radiation safety; studying the impact of various factors, including natural and man-made ones, on the reliability of construction structures and components of nuclear energy facilities; scientifically based risk analysis; assessing the effectiveness of radiation protection for personnel working with nuclear materials and sources of ionizing radiation.
Other areas of activity include: safety assessment for radioactive waste and nuclear material management; providing decision support on emergency preparedness and response issues; preparation and support of international scientific programmes; conducting scientific research in the field of nuclear and radiation safety assurance.
