The roe deer belongs to the deer family and is the smallest representative of this family in the Republic of Belarus (body weight around 30 kg). At the same time, the roe deer is the most numerous wild ungulate in Belarus.
It is considered a valuable game animal due to its dietary meat and the beautiful antlers of the males. It has a timid nature, preferring a solitary lifestyle in the summer, while in winter, roe deer stay in small groups.
Hunting for male roe deer begins in Belarus on May 15, one of the most popular types of hunting among trophy seekers. We will tell you about the specifics, key rules, and consequences of their violation.
Dates and Specifics. Hunting is permitted for adult male roe deer and selective animals of any sex and age from May 15 to September 30. This period was not chosen by chance: by mid-May, the males' antlers are completely cleared of velvet, turning into a valuable trophy.
The issuance of permits for roe deer harvesting to hunters is carried out by hunting ground users in accordance with the approved plans for the removal of regulated species of game animals.
Hunting Tools and Methods. Hunting is permitted around the clock, using ambush or stalking methods. Rifled hunting weapons are allowed according to the List of cartridges (calibres) for rifled hunting weapons permitted for harvesting game animals depending on the species and (or) age, established by the Resolution of the Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Belarus dated February 20, 2025, No. 3. Smoothbore weapons are allowed using cartridges loaded with bullets or buckshot, as well as hunting bows and crossbows. For tracking wounded or harvested animals, pointing dogs, spaniels, retrievers, terriers, and dachshunds, as well as dogs of other breeds with a field diploma for blood tracking, can be used.
Responsibility. We remind you that the illegal harvesting of roe deer entails criminal liability in accordance with Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus, which provides for the deprivation of the right to hunt with a fine, restriction of liberty, or imprisonment. In addition, the offender is obliged to compensate for the environmental damage caused in the amount of 120 basic units for each illegally harvested roe deer.
Population. In 2025, the roe deer population, according to statistical data, was about 140 thousand individuals. Their hunting quota was over 34 thousand individuals. It should also be noted that the roe deer population has currently reached the optimal size established for Belarus.
