This technology will allow velcom subscribers to make voice calls within the mobile network via a Wi-Fi network, BELTA was informed by the operator's press service.
Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) technology allows the use of voice communication while retaining the subscriber's mobile number through any available Wi-Fi network. The procedure for making such a call is no different from the mechanism of a regular call: the subscriber selects any number from the contact book, and the smartphone automatically establishes the connection, but via Wi-Fi. A special application is not required for this – it is enough to activate the function on the phone once and make calls in the usual way.
After the commercial launch, it will be possible to make calls via Wi-Fi both within the velcom network and to numbers of other mobile operators and landline phones. Unlike existing OTT services, Wi-Fi Calling makes a call using the mobile operator's network. A Wi-Fi call will cost the subscriber the same as a regular call in accordance with their tariff plan, while maintaining high-quality HD calls.
The technology will improve the quality of voice communication and expand its coverage area. Wi-Fi Calling may be in demand in shops or cafes located in basement and lower floors. The technology can also be used in settlements remote from communication towers, at dachas and farmsteads where external obstacles hinder signal propagation, and in some business centers with external glazing that shields mobile signal penetration.
This technology is currently being implemented by many major mobile operators worldwide.
