In January-December 2021, the region registered a number of pedestrian-involved road traffic accidents (RTAs) similar to the 2020 period (132), along with a decrease in fatalities (-6.9%; from 31 to 29) and an increase in injuries (+5.5%; from 104 to 110).
There was a significant increase in fatalities (+75%; from 4 to 7) and injuries (+92.3%; from 13 to 25) in RTAs involving cyclists.
In addition, there was an increase in the number of RTAs (+12.8%; from 17 to 19) committed by cyclists, as well as in the number of injured citizens (+15.4%; from 13 to 15) in these accidents.
One of the causes of road traffic accidents is the absence of retroreflective elements and high-visibility vests among pedestrians and cyclists during dark hours. The Traffic Police Department of Lepel District Department of Internal Affairs is undertaking specific work to prevent RTAs involving pedestrians and cyclists, and administrative measures are applied to traffic rule violators. However, this problem cannot be solved by penalty sanctions alone; targeted work in cooperation with other departments is necessary.
To enhance the effectiveness of preventive measures against RTAs involving and caused by vulnerable road users, and to foster mutual respect among road users, the State Automobile Inspectorate is conducting a set of preventive activities from January 17, 2022, to February 06, 2022. The aim is to prevent RTAs involving pedestrians and to promote the use of retroreflective elements and high-visibility vests during dark hours.
We kindly ask you to immediately inform the duty officer of the Lepel District Department of Internal Affairs about vulnerable road users on the road who are intoxicated or whose conduct creates prerequisites for committing an RTA, in order to promptly remove them from the roadway.
