In January-March 2022, the region recorded an increase (+12%; from 8 to 9) in incidents caused by pedestrians, as well as an increase (+100%; from 3 to 6) in the number of injured vulnerable road users in these incidents.

Furthermore, an increase in the number of incidents involving cyclists (+100%; from 0 to 1) has been registered, as well as an increase in fatalities (+100%; from 1 to 2) among citizens involved in these incidents.
One of the causes of road traffic accidents is the absence of retroreflective elements and high-visibility vests on pedestrians and cyclists during dark hours. The Traffic Police Department of the Lepel District Department of Internal Affairs is undertaking specific work to prevent road traffic accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists, and administrative measures are applied to violators of traffic regulations. However, this problem cannot be solved by punitive sanctions alone; targeted work in cooperation with other departments is necessary.
To enhance the effectiveness of accident prevention efforts involving and caused by vulnerable road users, and to foster mutually respectful relationships among road users, the State Automobile Inspectorate is conducting a set of preventive measures from April 18 to April 30, 2022. The aim of these measures is to prevent accidents involving pedestrians and to promote the use of retroreflective elements and high-visibility vests during dark hours.
We kindly request you to immediately inform the duty officer of the Lepel District Department of Internal Affairs about vulnerable road users found on the road who are in a state of intoxication or whose conduct creates preconditions for committing road traffic accidents, with the aim of their timely removal from the roadway.
