On December 18, at approximately 5 p.m., rescuers received a report about a man who had fallen through the ice on Lake Ostrovno, near the village of Ostrovno, Lepel district. Emergency rescue units were immediately dispatched to the scene. As it later transpired, before the rescuers arrived, the fisherman, born in 1956, was rescued by a citizen driving past in a car (Ivanovsky Andrey Vladimirovich, born in 1965, a resident of the village of Bobrovo). The man was handed over to the ambulance crew that arrived at the scene and, after examination, was hospitalised at the district hospital with general hypothermia.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations warns: venturing onto thin ice is dangerous. A life jacket is a mandatory item for every fisherman. Rescuers urge winter fishing enthusiasts to refrain from going onto the ice, and parents to remain vigilant and explain to children daily that playing on the ice can lead to tragedy.
