On February 6th at 18:27, the rescue service received a report from the duty officer of Lepel Central District Hospital about a house fire on 2nd Zavodskaya Street in the town of Lepel.

Upon arrival of the units from Lepel District Department for Emergency Situations, no fire was observed at the scene. The 66-year-old owner was inside the house. After examination by ambulance medical personnel, his death was confirmed.

As it became known later, the man lived with his 54-year-old brother. Returning home from work in the evening, the brother noticed smoke coming from the house window. Upon entering, he found his brother lying on the floor near a smouldering bed, with no signs of life. The brother immediately called for an ambulance and extinguished the fire with a bucket of water.

As a result of the fire, the bed and carpet in the house were damaged. The cause of the fire is being established. The version being considered is careless handling of fire while smoking by the deceased.

Dear citizens! Observe fire safety rules in everyday life, do not smoke in residential areas, and ensure that matches and cigarettes are extinguished after use. Install autonomous fire alarms in your living rooms, which will promptly alert you to danger in case of a fire. And remember: one unextinguished cigarette can cost a life, and not just one!
