The memorial sign, approximately 1.5 m high and 3.7 m wide, is installed on the central alley near the Palace of Culture in the urban settlement of Vetrino, as the 9th separate motor transport battalion was stationed near this settlement during the war. The monument is made in the form of an armoured shield, which was installed on military vehicles in Afghanistan. In its centre are the surnames of the soldiers who died while performing their military duty, and at the bottom are silhouettes of mountains. In front of the shield is a three-dimensional pyramid with a military-style helmet and four black tulips, symbolising the victims of the Afghan War.
The unveiling of the monument is timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. Representatives of the authorities, members of the Polotsk public organisation of internationalist soldiers, youth, and residents of the city and district will take part in the solemn requiem rally.
