Five smugglers were apprehended red-handed in the Verkhnedvinsk district by servicemen of the Polotsk Border Guard Detachment, in cooperation with officers of the transport police department and officers of the military counterintelligence of the KGB, the head of the press service of the Polotsk Border Guard Detachment, Denis Glebko, informed a BELTA correspondent.
On the evening of 30 January, another attempt to illegally move 67.5 thousand packs of cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps from Belarus to Latvia was thwarted in the Verkhnedvinsk district. 35 km from Verkhnedvinsk, a GAZ-66 truck carrying five citizens of Belarus was detained. They intended to load 135 boxes of cigarettes onto a freight train travelling from Polotsk to Daugavpils. One of the detainees was a driver from the "Polotsk" locomotive depot. According to law enforcement agencies, this citizen was delivering the contraband to the railway track, driving the truck.
An investigation is currently underway to identify all individuals involved in this offence. The cigarettes have been handed over to officers of the Ministry of Taxes and Duties inspectorate.-0-
