A group of car scammers has been convicted in Vitebsk, the official representative of the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus for the Vitebsk region, Inna Gorbacheva, told a BELTA correspondent. Two Vitebsk residents searched for cars to buy in the regional center, agreed with their owners on installment payments, providing a promissory note as confirmation, concluded a car sale agreement, and then disappeared. At the same time, the "buyers" informed the unfortunate sellers about the postponement of payments due to a number of serious circumstances, gradually ignoring their calls. Thus, the scammers managed to defraud about 20 people. They sold the acquired cars within the next few days after the "purchase" at a lower price, increasingly increasing the amount of debt obligations, which they did not intend to fulfill from the outset. The court of the Pervomaisky district of Vitebsk found the main defendant of the case, born in 1992, guilty of misappropriating property by deception (fraud), committed by a group of persons, on a particularly large scale and, based on Part 4 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus, sentenced him to 6 years and 6 months of imprisonment in a penal colony under an enhanced regime with confiscation of property.
