On the Day of Unity of the Peoples of Belarus and Russia, a sapling of the famous Victory Poplar, which survived the Battle of Stalingrad, was planted on the territory of the Botanical Garden in Vitebsk.
– Time has proven the unbreakable bond and friendship between the peoples of Belarus and Russia, which is based on the principles of trust, respect, mutual support, and common spiritual and moral values. On the eve of this date, at the invitation of the Volgograd region, a delegation from Vitebsk took part in the solemn handover of the Stalingrad poplar sapling in Moscow. This is a unique tree that was planted before the Great Patriotic War. Today, it embodies the courage and resilience of the Soviet people, serves as a symbol of revival, and is a memory that will be carried through the years, – noted Olga Ivanova, Chairperson of the Vitebsk City Council of Deputies.
Today, the long-lived poplar grows in the Fallen Fighters Square in Volgograd. Its trunk was literally riddled with "scars" and "abrasions" from bullets and shells. However, in the spring of 1943, after the city was liberated from the Nazi invaders, the tree bloomed. To preserve the memory of the great feat of the people during the Great Patriotic War, Russian scientists created a nursery of Victory Poplar saplings using the method of microclonal propagation. Thus, since 2017, a federal public campaign of the same name has been launched, within the framework of which unique clones have been planted in cities across Russia.
Vitebsk became the first city in our country to receive a Victory Poplar sapling. It was planted on peaceful Belarusian land, reminding us of the common heroic history of Belarus and Russia.
