15 February, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA/. Seven biogas complexes are planned to be commissioned in the Vitebsk region by 2015, the energy and fuel department of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee informed a BELTA correspondent.
The use of biogas as fuel is a promising direction for replacing natural gas. Biogas is a mixture of gases, the main component of which is methane, obtained as a result of anaerobic fermentation of organic substances. This can be the fermentation of waste from livestock complexes, poultry farms, landfills of industrial and domestic waste, specialists explained. In the region, it is planned to build three biocomplexes operating on landfill gas and 4 in agricultural enterprises over two years.
The Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee has concluded an investment agreement with a Swedish company for the construction of biogas complexes at municipal solid waste landfills in Vitebsk, Orsha, and Novopolotsk, with implementation periods of 2013-2014. In 2012, the first biogas complex was commissioned in Orsha.
Currently, nine biogas complexes are operating in Belarus, including three landfill gas power plants, four complexes using agricultural production waste, and two using industrial production waste. Work is underway on another 12 complexes.-0-
