In the Vitebsk region, 14.7 thousand families raising 28.4 thousand children received material assistance for the new academic year, as reported by the Committee for Labour, Employment and Social Protection of the Regional Executive Committee.

As of August 21, the total amount of support provided amounted to Br1.7 million. This includes Br831.5 thousand from local budget funds provided to 8 thousand large families (15.7 thousand children). Assistance from employers was provided to 5.6 thousand families (10.4 thousand children) totalling Br566.3 thousand.

The provision of material assistance for preparing children for the new academic year is stipulated by the subprogramme "Family and Childhood" of the state programme "People's Health and Demographic Security of the Republic of Belarus" for 2016-2020. In accordance with this document, financial support in the form of one-time material assistance for the academic year is provided to families raising three or more children, for each student attending general secondary and special education institutions (at the level of general secondary education), to low-income families, and to families with children with disabilities or disabled parents, through the provision of state targeted social assistance, and by attracting funds from enterprises, organisations, charitable foundations, and public associations.

In addition, charitable campaigns such as "To School - Together", "Let's Pack a Schoolbag Together", "A Child Goes to School", and others are currently underway in the region, organised by trade union committees, public organisations, enterprises, etc., aimed at vulnerable categories of children.
