Law enforcement officers discovered a cache of ammunition from the Great Patriotic War in the Vitebsk district, as reported to a BELTA correspondent by Vitaly Sapronenko, an official representative of the Internal Affairs Directorate of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee.
The ammunition was found by employees of the 7th Directorate (for the Vitebsk Region) of the Main Directorate for Combating Organised Crime and Corruption of the Ministry of Internal Affairs on October 29 in a forest near the village of Maklaki. The cache contained 87 artillery shells of 76 mm calibre, one 122-millimetre artillery shell, seven artillery fuses, and an RG-42 grenade. Their total mass in TNT equivalent was almost 66 kg.
The ammunition was destroyed by a sapper-pyrotechnic group of military unit 5524 of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
"Since the beginning of the year, this is the fifth similar cache of wartime ammunition discovered by employees of the Main Directorate for Combating Organised Crime and Corruption in the Vitebsk region alone. In addition to the Vitebsk district, caches were found in the Gorodok, Senno, and Beshenkovichi districts. The total number of munitions seized from them was almost 400 units," said Vitaly Sapronenko.
