On March 12, Vitebsk /Diana Kurilo - BELTA/. Since the beginning of the current year, servicemen of the Polotsk Border Detachment, in cooperation with various agencies, have thwarted over 20 attempts to transport goods worth more than Br600 million, Denis Glebko, Assistant Head of the Polotsk Border Detachment for Media Relations, told a BELTA correspondent. As a rule, a significant part of the seized contraband consisted of Belarusian-made cigarettes, but small batches of clothing were also found. For example, on the eve of March 8, a passenger car "Opel Astra" driven by a Lithuanian citizen was detained while attempting to illegally import knitwear from Latvia into Belarus. At the "Urbany" border crossing point, the border patrol for vehicle inspection, a canine unit together with a customs officer discovered 45 items of clothing under the rear and front seats of the car, with an estimated value of almost Br4.7 million. All goods have been seized. An investigation is currently underway. The driver of the car will be held liable for violating the law, and the issue of confiscating the car as a means of transporting goods will be decided by the court. -0-
