27 April, Vitebsk /Olga Bogacheva - BELTA/. A resident of Vitebsk stole an ambulance to give to his wife, the official representative of the Investigative Committee Department for the Vitebsk Region, Inna Gorbacheva, told a BELTA correspondent.
The previous night, a 34-year-old employee of a construction company in the regional center, passing by the Vitebsk City Ambulance Station, saw keys left in the ignition of one of the service vehicles. Without much thought, the man got behind the wheel of the ambulance and drove off. The trip lasted about 15-20 minutes and ended with a collision with a taxi. No one was injured in the accident, and the car thief, who was found to be intoxicated, was immediately detained by traffic police officers who had already been notified of the incident.
As the detainee later explained his actions, his wife "really needed" the ambulance, so he decided to steal it. Law enforcement officers assessed the Vitebsk resident's impulse in accordance with the provisions of the Criminal Code of Belarus. Now, a criminal case has been initiated against the man, who had not previously come to the attention of the police, under Part 1 of Article 214, which provides for up to five years of imprisonment. -0-
