Belarus will participate in the international environmental campaign "Earth Hour" for the tenth time this year. The purpose of the event is to turn off lights and unnecessary electrical appliances for one hour, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. It is expected that this call will be supported in our country by concerned residents of Minsk, Baranovichi, Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel, Kamenets, Polotsk, Pinsk, Shumilino. The Centre for Urban Projects and Initiatives "Prastora" in Vitebsk will diversify the campaign programme with additional activities.
All interested individuals, from 6:00 PM, can participate in the intellectual quiz "Living Planet" after registering in advance. Following the symbolic switch-off of lights, the white eco-party "City by Candlelight" will begin. Organisers ask participants to come in white clothing or with white accessories, which will symbolise the purity of nature. Participants of the musical and aesthetic project ECCO SQUAD will perform at the party, combining energetic dance rhythms and a bright, serene atmosphere of nature in their DJ sets. "The guys implemented this long-conceived format for the first time in 2017, performing in support of the Vitebsk II Urban Art Forum 'Prastora', which was included in the City Day programme. The chillwave and ambient music format combined with the immersive sounds of nature in Frunze Park," explained Oksana Kuzina, director of the "Prastora" centre.
"The Centre for Urban Projects and Initiatives 'Prastora' has been actively participating in the 'Earth Hour' campaign for three years. This year, it will be held universally on March 24, and organisers suggest addressing the issue of how nature is connected with people and climate change, and how climate change affects nature.
Today, "Earth Hour" is the largest environmental campaign on the planet. It is joined by over 2 billion people from 184 countries and 7,000 cities. It is organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF); in Belarus, the organiser is the environmental organisation "Green Network".
