Comb and needle knitting, fork weaving, and many other forgotten crafts can be mastered at the cultural and historical complex "Golden Ring of the City of Vitebsk "Dvina" by anyone interested. The "Vechorki" craft seminar opened today, as reported to a BELTA correspondent at the cultural and historical complex. For two days, about 30 Belarusian and Russian masters of medieval HandMade will explain and demonstrate how Eastern Slavs in the 9th-11th centuries made fabrics and clothing. The artisans intend to weave on a vertical loom, which has served humanity since ancient Egypt, and will knit not with needles, but with their ancestors - the needle and the comb. In Europe, the ancient technique of interlacing threads with a comb is known as sprang and is currently experiencing its second birth. Thus, the master class is interesting not only because it allows one to delve into the history of ancient needlework but also to acquire skills that will be useful for modern fashionistas. Learning to make felt, and items made from it are especially popular nowadays, will also be possible at these educational "Vechorki". Wet and dry felting will become another subject of study at the craft seminar. The initiator of the craft master classes is the historical reconstruction and modeling club "Naglfarr," which invited artisans to exchange experience in reconstructing textile production technologies in the early Middle Ages. According to specialists of the cultural and historical complex, such master classes help to interest young people in the history of the origin of folk crafts and give hope that ancient crafts will not disappear. Moreover, the artisans' demonstrations always attract tourists. The first spectators and students have already become schoolchildren from Smolensk who came on an excursion to Vitebsk. -0-
