Despite a decrease in the number of pedestrian-involved road traffic accidents in the Vitebsk region (from 67 to 44), as well as the severity of their consequences (fatalities – from 31 to 10, injuries – from 57 to 36), the number of citizen fatalities resulting from this type of accident remains significant (34.5%).

Behind each figure lies a terrible tragedy, shock, and distress for the injured. Grief, tears, and despair in the families of the deceased. Each traffic accident occurred differently and under various circumstances, but they share one commonality: a minor disregard for the Rules, resulting in crippled lives or a life suddenly cut short.
For instance, on 08.06.2017 at 23:28, a resident of the Brest region, born in 1959, driving a "Renault Magnum 460" truck on the 169th km of the Minsk – Vitebsk highway, travelling from Minsk towards Vitebsk, collided with a pedestrian walking on the roadway in the opposite direction, who was intoxicated. The pedestrian, a resident of the village of Chereyshchino, Lepel district, born in 1976, an employee of OJSC "Chereyshchina", died at the scene as a result of the accident.
To prevent similar accidents, the State Automobile Inspectorate of the Lepel district is conducting a special set of measures called "Pedestrian" from July 4th to July 10th.
These measures are aimed at improving the level of culture and mutual understanding between drivers and pedestrians, as it is often the latter who pay with their inattention and carelessness on the road, a price measured in life and health.
Pedestrians should remember that, in addition to the fact that disregarding traffic rules is dangerous to life or health, administrative responsibility for them has not been abolished. Currently, the fine for a violating pedestrian ranges from 1 to 3 base units, and if the violation is committed while intoxicated, one will have to pay at least 3 base units, which is a considerable sum.
The State Automobile Inspectorate of Lepel District once again reminds road users that all of you, both drivers and pedestrians, are equally responsible for road safety. And discipline and attention sometimes determine the life and health of both yourself and those around you.
In conclusion, we would like to address everyone who is behind the wheel: Dear drivers! Be extremely attentive and cautious when approaching crowded places and pedestrian crossings. Do not forget to yield to pedestrians! Show special attention and care to the elderly, women, and children.
Of course, it is always difficult to advise people on how to protect themselves from road incidents. However, we are confident that many accidents could have been avoided by preventing them not only through your impeccable adherence to the Traffic Regulations but also through attentive and cautious behavior on the road!
