In January-September 2017, 705 road traffic accidents (RTAs) involving pedestrians occurred on the territory of the Republic (-136; -16.2% compared to the same period last year), resulting in 137 (+6; +4.6%) fatalities and 608 (-145; -19.3%) injuries. The number of fatalities increased in Brest (from 12 to 18), Mogilev (from 12 to 15), Grodno (from 10 to 13) regions, and the city of Minsk (from 13 to 17).

While the number of RTAs involving pedestrians at night decreased (from 361 to 344; -17; -4.7%) and the number of injured persons in these accidents also decreased (from 289 to 265; -24; -8.3%), the number of fatalities in these accidents increased (from 89 to 101; +12; +13.5%).
In September alone this year, 26 out of 32 (81.3%) pedestrians killed in RTAs sustained fatal injuries during nighttime hours.
From October 13 to 15, 5 RTAs involving pedestrian fatalities were registered in the Republic of Belarus.
Near the village of Podberezye, Pukhovichi District, at 19:10, a driver operating a Volkswagen minibus hit a pensioner who was crossing the roadway at an unregulated pedestrian crossing (not marked with retroreflective elements). The pedestrian died.
In Stolin, at 20:25, a tractor driver from KFH "Aven Ezer", operating a MTZ tractor, hit a pensioner, born in 1951, who was crossing the roadway at a green traffic light. The pensioner died.
In the agro-town of Nikitikha, Shumilino District, at 20:40, a driver operating a Peugeot car hit an unemployed local resident, born in 1969, who was crossing the roadway at an unregulated pedestrian crossing. The resident was hospitalised, where she died at 23:15.
Near the agro-town of Senitsa, Minsk District, at 20:20, a driver born in 1993, operating an Opel car, hit an unidentified person (not marked with retroreflective elements). Subsequently, this person was hit by a Nissan car driven by a driver born in 1995. As a result, the pedestrian died.
Near the village of Tomki, Miory District, at 22:05, a local resident born in 1996, operating an Opel car, hit a pedestrian born in 1975. The pedestrian died.
Near the village of Dorzhi, Lida District, at 19:10, a driver born in 1955, operating a Ford car, hit a local resident born in 1949 (not equipped with reflective elements), who died.
For 9 months of 2017, 4 road traffic accidents involving pedestrians were registered in the Lepel District, in which 2 pedestrians died and 2 were injured.
On 30.03.2017 at 22:15, a resident of Novopolotsk, born in 1986, driving a Nissan Micra car, on the 10th km of the Lepel-Polotsk-Russian Federation border road, hit a resident of the village of Zaborye who was standing on the road and was intoxicated (3.7%). As a result of this road traffic accident, the pedestrian sustained bodily injuries.
On 08.06.2017 at 23:28, a resident of the Brest Region, born in 1959, operating a Renault Magnum 460 truck, on the 169th km of the Minsk-Vitebsk road (Borovka village), moving from Minsk towards Vitebsk, during oncoming traffic, hit a resident of the village of Chereyshchino, Lepel District, born in 1976, who was walking on the roadway in the opposite direction and was intoxicated. As a result of the road traffic accident, the pedestrian died at the scene.
For the period from 2013 to the elapsed period of 2017, 26 road traffic accidents involving pedestrians were registered in the Lepel District, resulting in 8 pedestrians killed and 18 injured. Of the 26 pedestrian-involved accidents, 15 were caused by the pedestrians themselves.
The main cause of accidents due to pedestrians' fault is being on the roadway while intoxicated (11 out of 15 accidents). 15 out of 24 accidents occurred in the dark, of which in 11 accidents pedestrians were not marked with reflective elements.
In total, for 9 months of 2017, employees of the Lepel District Department of Internal Affairs brought 389 pedestrians to administrative responsibility. 74 violations of traffic rules at pedestrian crossings were detected.
In order to minimize negative seasonal manifestations in road traffic safety and to improve the effectiveness of the Internal Affairs bodies' work in eliminating the causes and conditions of road traffic injuries involving pedestrians, from October 16 to October 26, 2017, the republican preventive campaign "Time to be Visible!" is being held in the Republic of Belarus.
