Over the 8 months of the current year, 74 (previous year - 75) road traffic accidents involving pedestrians were registered in the Vitebsk region, compared to the same period in 2019. In these accidents, 16 (previous year - 16) people died and 59 (previous year - 63) sustained injuries of varying severity.

In these accidents, 16 (previous year - 16) people died and 59 (previous year - 63) sustained injuries of varying severity. Of these, 29 (previous year - 27) accidents were caused by pedestrians, resulting in 10 deaths and 20 injuries. Additionally, there was an increase in the number of accidents caused by pedestrians under the influence of alcohol (from 12 to 14), which resulted in the deaths of 6 vulnerable road users.
Despite the ongoing efforts to prevent accidents involving cyclists, there has been an increase in incidents in this category (+19%; from 21 to 25), as well as in the number of fatalities (from 2 to 3) and injuries (from 19 to 23). Cyclists were at fault in 12 (previous year - 13) accidents, which resulted in 3 deaths and 9 injuries. Four incidents involved cyclists under the influence of alcohol.
All measures implemented by the traffic police department of the Lepel District Department of Internal Affairs to ensure road safety are aimed at reducing the number of road traffic accidents and the number of people injured and killed in them. One of the contributing factors to accidents is the failure of pedestrians to use retroreflective elements in the dark.
In order to minimise the negative seasonal effects on road safety and to improve the effectiveness of the internal affairs bodies in eliminating the causes and conditions of road traffic injuries involving pedestrians, **on 25 September 2020, an event will be held in the Republic of Belarus as part of the Unified Road Safety Day, under the slogan: "Time to be Visible!".**
