The main sources of water supply in the district originate from groundwater. They require protection from pollution even more than surface waters, as the self-purification process is delayed for tens or even hundreds of years due to the lack of oxygen underground and low infiltration rates.
There are 23 business entities in the district that abstract water from underground and surface sources for economic needs.
Potential sources of groundwater pollution also include idle underground wells that are no longer in use. During an inventory conducted at the beginning of the current year, in cooperation with representatives of the State Enterprise "Belarusian Research Institute of Geological Exploration" RUP "Belgeologiya", 51 such artesian wells were identified. Currently, four of them have been plugged – on the territory of KUVSGP "Lepel". A contract for plugging four wells in KUVSGP "Babrovo" has been concluded. In addition, the district territory was inspected by a commission, during which the location of 77 wells in the field was not established. They have been written off the balance sheet.
