From this day until March 1, it is necessary to use tires with appropriate markings and an identical tread pattern on the same axle. The requirement does not apply to owners of buses weighing over five tons and heavy trucks weighing over 3.5 tons, — emphasizes Viktor Rotchenkov, Head of the Main Department of Traffic Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
What is considered winter tires under the new rules? Tires that simultaneously bear two markings: an image of a mountain peak with three peaks and a snowflake inside, as well as any of the symbols: M+S, M&S, or M S. They are considered winter tires, including if they have any additional designations: for example, All Season, Road+Winter (R+W), Any Weather.Tires marked only with the All Season or M+S symbol cannot be used during the winter period! Such tires do not provide reliable grip at temperatures below +7°C and can cause accidents, especially on icy or snowy roads.
Why is it important to change tires? Even in a snowless winter, when a thin layer of ice or snow slush appears on the roads, unsuitable tires increase the braking distance and the risk of skidding. It is especially dangerous to drive on old or unprepared tires.
Viktor Rotchenkov strongly advises adopting a more measured driving style:
- increase the distance
- drive at a SAFE speed
- avoid sudden maneuvers
- be especially attentive at pedestrian crossings and on road curves.
