The body of a six-year-old girl who drowned on March 6 in Lepel district was found by divers, Alexander Myasoedov, acting chairman of the Vitebsk regional organization of the Belarusian Republican Society for Rescue on Water (OSVOD), told a BELTA correspondent. The tragedy occurred on the evening of March 6 in the village of Mezhytsa. The mother picked up the girl from kindergarten and allowed her to play outside with a friend, leaving her unsupervised. The children went to the Ulla River, located 70 meters from the houses, and after some time, cries for help were heard. One of the girls fell into a washout and was dragged under the ice by a strong current. The search for the body began early in the morning of March 7. A diving search group from Vitebsk and specialists from the Novolukoml and Novopolotsk rescue stations were involved in the work. The search operation was complicated by the fact that due to the shallow depth, divers had to work in confined conditions - almost crawling under the ice and with minimal visibility. The child's body was found on the evening of March 13. OSVOD draws the attention of the region's residents to the need to observe personal safety rules on the ice, especially when it begins to melt. Rescuers urge adults not to leave children unsupervised. Since the beginning of the current year, four people have drowned in the region, with two people falling victim to the first ice, one man drowned in a lake in Russia, and the fourth victim was a little girl from Lepel district. -0-
