10 October, Vitebsk /BELTA/. An exhibition of works by Belarusian artist Robert Genin has opened at the Marc Chagall Museum in Vitebsk, as reported to BELTA by the museum's director, Lyudmila Khmelnitskaya.
The exhibition "Robert Genin. In Search of Paradise: Bali, 1926" is provided from the private collection of Alexei Rodionov (Saint Petersburg). It includes 18 pastels brought by Genin from his trip to Bali, as well as 5 early works, including the painting "Green Church in Krasovichi," which is dedicated to childhood memories. An album has also been published for the exhibition, containing over 100 colour illustrations of Genin's works from museum and private collections in Germany, Switzerland, and Russia.
Alexei Rodionov has donated to the Marc Chagall Museum an etching "The Mourner" (1923), executed in the drypoint technique, as well as the book "Skizzen/Erinnerungen. Robert Genin" (Sketches and Recollections) from a privileged edition of 100 copies, printed on handmade paper in 1920 by Otto von Holten in Berlin, with five original lithographs and a signed original etching printed by Gurlitt.
Robert Genin (1884-1941) was born in the Mogilev Governorate and received his initial art education in Vilnius and Odessa. In 1902, he moved to Munich, then lived and worked alternately in Germany, Switzerland, and France, achieving success. In 1926, he undertook a journey to the island of Bali. His impressions of Bali gave a powerful impetus to his creative work. In 1936, Genin returned to Russia.
