6 April, Vitebsk /Olga Bogacheva - BELTA/. An exhibition of Easter eggs has opened at the Vitebsk Museum of Private Collections, a BELTA correspondent was informed by the cultural institution. The exhibition features over 150 items from the private collection of Irina Baranova, which has been assembled over 10 years. These are eggs made of wood, ceramics, glass, resin, metal, as well as those decorated by her with beads, ribbons, threads, and other decor. Among the exhibits are also compositions on Easter themes and symbols of the Easter holiday – a hen, a chick, and a hare. According to our ancestors' beliefs, the egg symbolises the Universe, and with the advent of Christianity, it became a symbol of Christ's Holy Resurrection. The tradition of colouring eggs is closely linked to the story of Mary Magdalene, who presented an egg to Emperor Tiberius with the words "Christ is Risen". In response, he doubted: "It is impossible to believe this, just as it is impossible for this egg to suddenly turn red." And at that very moment, the white egg turned red. Over time, eggs began not only to be dyed but also richly decorated. Entire unique collections were created, which still amaze with their craftsmanship and continue to surprise contemporaries. For example, the world-famous Fabergé eggs have, since their creation, become synonymous with luxury and are the object of admiration for many collectors.-0-
