Legislation in the defence sphere is being improved in Belarus

Deputies of the House of Representatives plan to consider in the first reading the bill "On Amendments and Additions to Certain Laws of the Republic of Belarus on Defence Issues" during the spring session. This was reported to a BELTA correspondent by Sergey Bobrikov, Deputy Chairman of the Standing Commission on National Security, who is overseeing the preparation of this document.

The deputy noted that last year a new Military Doctrine was approved, which defined the military-political, military-strategic, and military-economic foundations of the country's security at the present stage. "In early January, amendments to certain laws on defence issues were submitted to the House of Representatives, which, among other things, develop the provisions of the new Military Doctrine. For example, norms are envisaged that are aimed at improving the military planning system, clarifying the tasks for the use of the Armed Forces, and the system of mandatory training of citizens for military service," explained Sergey Bobrikov.

According to him, this involves making amendments and additions to several laws at once: on the Armed Forces, on military duty and military service, on pension provision for military personnel, on mobilisation training and mobilisation, as well as on the status of military personnel.

"The improvement of legislation in the sphere of national security in our country is constantly and systematically carried out, based on the results of the assessment of the military-political situation in the world, forecasts of its development, scientific research, and the experience of military construction accumulated in Belarus. Specific proposals are developed taking this into account," the parliamentarian said.

Furthermore, as reported, during the spring session, deputies are preparing to consider amendments to certain laws on combating terrorism in the first reading. This draft law defines the term "critically important facilities." These are individual structures, sites, organizations, and institutions whose disruption due to an act of terrorism could lead to destabilization of public order, human casualties, or cause damage. It is also planned to change the competence of state security bodies and border service bodies in combating terrorism by preventing, detecting, and suppressing the international and other activities of terrorist organizations. The powers of the Security Service of the President regarding decisions on establishing an operational headquarters for managing a counter-terrorism operation will be clarified.
