Fishing for pike in Belarus is prohibited from March 1 to April 15. In the Vitebsk region, the ban will be in effect from March 9 to April 25. This was reported to BELTA by the State Inspectorate for the Protection of Fauna and Flora under the President of the Republic of Belarus.

During this period, pike are spawning. "In terms of spawning time among fish in Belarus, pike is ahead of all others – it spawns in March-April when the water temperature is 4-6 degrees Celsius. Spawning begins immediately after the ice melts and occurs near the shores at a depth of 0.5-1 m; in the southern regions, it begins 10-15 days earlier than in the northern ones, and in lakes, it begins later than in rivers," specialists noted.

The timing and duration of spawning depend on climatic conditions and, primarily, on water warming. The peak is observed at a temperature of 5-7 degrees Celsius. Pike are a kind of regulator. They destroy low-value small fish, sick and weakened fish, thereby promoting better growth of valuable fish species and improving the health of their populations, the State Inspectorate added.
