A ban on pike fishing is being introduced in Belarus from March 1, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection informed BELTA.
From March 1 to April 15, in accordance with clause 107 of the Rules for Fishery Management and Fishing, the catching of common pike is prohibited. In the Vitebsk region, the ban will be in effect from March 9 to April 25.
Pike, in terms of spawning, precedes all spring-spawning fish, laying eggs in March-April when the water temperature is plus 4-6 degrees Celsius. Pike spawning begins immediately after the ice melts and occurs in shallow areas of the coastal zone of water bodies, as well as in the floodplains of rivers and streams. At the same time, this species becomes defenseless against humans. Control by environmental protection authorities over compliance with the ban ensures the protection of this fish species and its effective reproduction.
