The Lepel Inter-district Inspectorate for the Protection of Fauna and Flora reminds you:
From May 31, a ban on catfish fishing will be in effect in the fishing grounds of the Vitebsk region, which will last until July 1. The ban on catfish fishing is related to its spawning and is one of the measures to protect this once red-listed species.
Catfish spawn later than other spring-spawning fish when the water is well warmed. It consumes trash, diseased, and dead fish, and is a bio-remediator of reservoirs, creating favorable conditions for the development of healthy ichthyofauna.
The illegal capture of one catfish during the ban will cost violators 12 base units (324 rubles). In addition, they will be subject to an administrative fine of up to 50 base units. And if the damage from illegal fishing exceeds 100 base units, a criminal case may be initiated.
