The Lepel Inter-district Inspectorate for the Protection of Fauna and Flora reminds that from November 15 to December 20, a ban on commercial fishing of European cisco will be introduced in the fishing grounds of Belarus. This ban is established due to its spawning season. The ban was introduced after the cisco was excluded from the list of protected species.

This ban is established due to its spawning season. The ban was introduced after the cisco was excluded from the list of protected species.
The cisco is the smallest representative of the whitefish species, its maximum length is no more than 25 cm, and it externally resembles herring. It inhabits the waters of the Vitebsk region and some lakes in the north of the Minsk region. The name of one of these lakes is consonant with the Belarusian name for cisco – "selyava".
From 1981 to 1993 and from 2004 to June 2014, the species was included in the Red Book of the Republic of Belarus and was banned from fishing. Now, fishing for cisco is permitted, except during the spawning period.
