Strict restrictions on the catch of the Wels catfish are in force in Belarus, aimed at preserving its population.
In the Brest and Gomel regions, the catch of catfish is prohibited from May 19 to June 19, while in other regions (Minsk, Grodno, Mogilev, Vitebsk regions), restrictions are in place from May 31 to July 1. The dates are linked to the spawning period of this species, when the catfish leaves its usual habitats for reproduction, becoming easy prey. Any incidentally caught catfish during the closed season must be immediately released back into the water body in any condition.
Violation of the ban entails administrative liability under Part 1 of Article 16.25 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Republic of Belarus, with a fine ranging from 10 to 30 base units, and possible confiscation of fishing gear. The illegal catch of one catfish during the closed season will cost the offender 12 base units. In the event that the damage from illegal fishing exceeds 100 base units, a criminal case may be initiated.
Compliance with these measures is not only a way to avoid fines but also a contribution to the preservation of the biodiversity of Belarusian rivers and lakes for future generations.
