Winter fish kills are observed both as a result of a complete cessation of oxygen supply from the air and a sharp limitation of plant life under the ice. The establishment of a stable ice cover and the impossibility of water-air contact (gas exchange) is the main factor that can cause fish kills. Winter fish kills occur within each individual water body not everywhere, but in certain areas, the areas of which change from year to year. Very often it is in winter that one can see fish gathering in ice holes, greedily gasping for air. The harbingers of fish kills are whirligig beetles and other insects that gather in ice holes.
The most sensitive to oxygen deficiency are ruff, zander, perch.
