Alexander Lukashenko’s visit to Oman to give impetus to bilateral cooperation

A visit of Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko to Oman will give a new impetus to the bilateral cooperation, first of all, in the trade-economic sphere, BelTA learnt in the presidential administration.

During the visit to Oman bilateral documents, including agreements between chambers of commerce and industry of the two countries will be signed.

The Republic of Belarus and Oman have been fruitfully cooperating within the United Nations Organization. The diplomatic relations between Belarus and Oman were established on June 23, 1992.

The first top-level official contacts between Belarus and Oman were established during a visit of Belarusian foreign minister Sergei Martynov to Oman in 2004. That very year economy minister of Oman Ahmed Macki paid a return visit to Belarus.

Now formation of the legal base of the bilateral relations is in progress. In 2004, intergovernmental agreements on trade-economic cooperation and investment protection and a memorandum of understanding between the foreign ministries of the two states were signed.

Oman is a member of the United Nations Organizations, International Monetary Fund, International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, World Trade Organization, Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, Arab League, Organization of the Islamic Conference, Non-Aligned Movement.

Oman’s foreign policy is pragmatic. The top political priorities of Oman are economic integration of the Gulf States, promotion of regional security.

Oman was against unilateral military operation of the USA in Iraq. It speaks for withdrawal of the occupational troops from that country.

Oman has been urging Iran, Iraq and Yemen to create a zone free of weapons of mass distraction and nuclear weapons in the Middle East.
